Tips on Hanging Window Treatments

Tips on Hanging Window Treatments

Jul 23, 2019

A good set of drapes can really highlight beautiful windows in your home. They add warmth and color and instantly pull your room together. Sometimes it is difficult to know the best way to hang window treatments, so we’ve listed some helpful tips below to get you started!

Take Curtains to the Floor

Always measure the height of your wall before purchasing your curtains. For a proper look, drapes should slightly touch the floor or hover one half-inch above.

Don’t Stop at the Windowsill

It is never a good idea to hang curtains to short, stopping at the windowsill. This high water look is not in style.

Hang Curtains High & Wide

Try to hang drapes at least 12 inches above the window frame or even all the way to the ceiling to give a greater effect. You can even extend the curtain rod out three to six inches on each side too. This makes your space look larger and more luxurious!

Don’t Hang Them Right Above the Window

If you hang drapes to low, they not only stunt the window but can give the entire space a crowded feel. They will also let in less light.

Layer Window Treatments

Typically, designer windows have at least two treatments going on. This tends to be blinds or plantation shutters, paired with drapes. This boosts style and turns the window into a design focal point.

Opt for Wide-Slat Blinds or Shutters

When you choose blinds or indoor shutters, it is worth the investment to pay more for wood or faux wood varieties with wide slats. These upscale treatments will increase the value of your home in the long run!

Don’t Skimp on Good Blinds

You’ll want to invest in some good blinds in your home. Those plastic budget blinds can break and discolor very easily and they take away from the overall attractiveness of your room. Small household pets, such as cats, are known for destroying these kinds of blinds since they are flimsy and easily broken.

Don’t Go Overboard

You never want to add too much of anything, especially when decorating your home. The same applies to window treatments. The more fabric you put on a window, the less light will come in, causing the room to feel smaller.
