Windows 101

Unless you work in the remodeling industry or have remodeled your home in the past, it’s unlikely that you’re familiar with all the ins-and-outs of windows. At Fairbanks Construction we’ve been working with windows for decades, so we’ve put together a handy little guide to help answer some of the most common questions we get about windows!

What’s a sash?

Think of a sash as the panels of the window with glass in them. Sashes may or may not be movable depending on which type of window you’re getting, and some windows types have multiple sashes!

Which window type is most popular?

Opinions vary depending on the home type and person, but it’s commonly believed that the most popular window type in homes is the double hung window. Double hung windows consist of two vertically arranged sashes, both of which can be moved up or down. Both sashes can also be tilted in for easy cleaning. Their convenience and classic look are probably why many people choose to install them throughout their home.

What’s the difference between a bay and a bow window?

While bay and bow windows both use angles to create a more open and elegant look to your home, they have one major difference. Bay windows are comprised of one central picture window and two angled side windows, while bow windows typically have four to five windows arranged to form a curve, creating a rounded appearance on the outside of your home.
