When you mention a Sunroom to the average homeowner, many images come to mind ; Patio Enclosures, Sun Parlors, Patio Rooms, Screen Rooms, Florida Rooms and Solariums just to name a few.

A Sunroom is normally defined as an external room built onto the side of a house with insulated glass, walls, screens, doors and a roof system.  The main goal of a Sunroom is to allow the homeowner to enjoy the surrounding landscape of the outside while being sheltered from weather conditions such as rain, heat and wind.

Sunrooms can be constructed with many different materials; Brick, Block, Stone, Glass, Aluminum, Wood, Acrylic, Concrete and even Plastic.  Obliviously, there are pros and cons to each material according to the desired look, performance, environment and costs.  Some material looks good for a few years, and yet others require regular maintenance, so the proper choice, design and construction materials are of key importance.

Frequently, but not always, Sunrooms are installed in place of and after the removal of an existing patio area.  This is because typically there is an existing slab and passage to and from the home.
Regardless, make sure to choose a Sunroom based on your lifestyle and personality.   Also consider the architectural look and pertaining to your house and the value it adds to your home.

There is much to be said about the technology behind a Sunroom.  What kind of thermal protection does the glass, roof, doors and walls offer?  Is the material properly processed and coated to resist dirt, fading, corrosion, insects, water and scratches?

Often, two identical materials that look exactly the same perform completely different because of how they were manufactured.   One material lasts the lifetime of the house and the other needs replacement within a few years.

Glass is a major component that makes a quality Sunroom as it helps control the climate of the room.  Pick the wrong glass and the Sunroom can become hot and uncomfortable during the summer or cold and drafty during the winter months.

Roof options are yet another important factor.   Conventional Roofs, Insulated Panel and non-insulated panel are the three basic types.  Make sure you understand the advantages and disadvantages of each before choosing.

Of great importance is how the Sunroom is installed.  A good Sunroom installed poorly can result in a bad experience.  Make sure you choose a reputable licensed and fully insured contractor with a good track record.
